Multiple Tutoring Options Available to Students on Campus

Fort Lewis College offers students several options to get tutoring help in a multitude of different subjects through resources such as the Writing Center, Algebra and Statistics Alcove, and the Math Assistance Center.

For students looking for help with their writing, or just looking for a second pair of eyes. The Writing Center in Jones 105 is an excellent resource to get student-to-student help, said Nancy Cardona, an english professor at Fort Lewis College.

“From the perspective of faculty, I am really grateful for the Writing Center because I know that there are any number of way to help students move through those kinds of challenges,” Cardona said. “I also understand that not all students are comfortable coming to me or one of my colleagues, and they might be more comfortable talking with a peer.”

Students that work at the Writing Center also have the knowledge of what professors are looking for since the have most likely taken the classes themselves, said Cardona. This makes them an invaluable resource for students looking to do better on their writing assignments for those classes.

For students looking for help in the mathematics side of the spectrum, the MAC, in Berndt 340, and the Algebra and Statistics alcove, in Jones 147, allows students to interact with tutors that specialize in those subjects.

One such tutor, Leslie Goldstein, has been helping students at the Algebra Alcove for 16 years now.

“The Alcove has been one of the places where students have been coming since it started 16 years ago and we’ve gotten everywhere from 200 visits a week,” says Goldstein.

With these different resources around campus, students have access to tutoring help for many different subjects from trained tutors and professors.
