FLC Volleyball Gets Shut Down at Home

Fort Lewis College’s Volleyball team had a tough couple of nights this weekend.
Friday night, the Skyhawks lost in straight sets, 3-0, against the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers and Saturday night, they lost again, this time to the Colorado Christian University Cougars, 3-1.
In Friday’s 3-0 loss the Skyhawks came out slow, losing the first set 25-21.
The second set brought more trouble for the Skyhawks. The lead for the Orediggers continued to expand and the Skyhawks lost the set 25-14.The Skyhawks couldn’t keep up with the Orediggers who put up 15 kills compared to FLC’s six during the second set.
During the last set the Skyhawks, were only able to muster eight kills on 30 attempts as they fell behind early and were no match for the Mines offense. The lead went from three to six quickly before the Orediggers pulled out the win 25-23.
Kendra Swackenberg,FLC junior and leader of the Skyhawks in sets, continued to lead the Skyhawks in assists, putting up 20 Friday night.
Saturday night, the Skyhawks tried to find their footing as they faced off against CCS.
The Skyhawks won the first set 25-20. The Skyhawks fought against the Cougars with a strong offense throughout the first set, but had trouble competing with CCU for the next three sets, which they lost.
The Skyhawks came up short in the next three sets. The second set was lost 23-25 after both teams fought back-and-forth throughout. FLC Junior, Megan Graefe, led the team on defense in the second set with 6 digs.The Skyhawks kept the score close throughout the set, not giving any hint as to which team was going to win.
The Skyhawks continued to keep the score close throughout the third set but lost 21-25. The final set of the day also brought the Skyhawks disappointment, with CCU pulling out a 17-25 win.
FLC Senior, Emily Dellenbach led the team in kills putting up 11 throughout the contest. The Skyhawks attack % of 0.59 was comparable to the Cougar’s attack % of 0.63 and both teams played strong defense throughout the contest, with team block totals of 6.0.
The Skyhawks Women's Volleyball team is now 8-8 overall and 3-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference after Saturday night’s loss.
The Skyhawks go into Homecoming weekend 2017 matching up against Chadron State Friday, October 13 at 7 p.m. in the Whalen Gymnasium and Saturday, October 14 at 5 p.m. at home against Regis.
