FLC Men’s Soccer Scores Fifth Shutout of Season

By Benjamin Mandile

The Fort Lewis College men’s soccer team banked their fifth shutout of the season on Friday at home with a 1-0 win over the Regis University Rangers.

The Skyhawks played tight defense in the first half, keeping Regis from scoring despite eight shots from  the Rangers.

Offensively, the Skyhawks were able to string together multiple passes that moved the ball forward to the Ranger’s side of the field but struggled to finish much of the game until junior midfielder Raul Pescador found the back of the Ranger’s net in the 53rd minute of the second half from eight yards out, after a flick pass from freshman midfielder Max Fuentes.

This is the second goal of the season for Pescador, who scored his first of the season against Regis last Friday.

The Skyhawks put up nine shot attempts against the Regis defense but had trouble getting their offense together and couldn’t find the back of the net for much of the game.

Freshman goalkeeper, Peter Byrne, led Fort Lewis to its fifth shutout, stopping all nine shots on goal by the Rangers.

The win this afternoon puts the Skyhawks at 7-4-4 overall and 7-2-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

This win allows the Skyhawks to keep pace with the three teams ahead of them in the RMAC, as they sit at fourth overall.

The Skyhawks men’s soccer team will host the RMAC first place team, #15 Colorado School of Mines, who is 12-3 overall and 10-1 in the RMAC, on Sunday at 1 p.m. for the Skyhawk’s senior day.
