The Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse team came away with a big win earlier today by defeating the Westminster Griffins 12-10.

Brooke Galle scored a hat-trick to lead the Skyhawks and Nikki Fry had 2 goals and 2 assists, including the game-sealing goal with 57 seconds left.

With the win, the Skyhawks (3-2, 3-5) move up to 4th place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Griffins slide to 5th.

The Skyhawks outshot the Griffins 33-26 and also won the turnover battle, 18-24.

The Skyhawks came out of the gates hot, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the game’s first 10 minutes. Westminster never gave up though, as they slowly came back throughout the half. Audree Erekson’s goal with 15 seconds left in the half tied the game at seven.

The scoring slowed down in the second half. The Skyhawks came out swinging, determined not to let the lead slip away like they did last Wednesday. FLC scored three straight to take a 10-7 lead midway through the period. Westminster’s Madison Ingman responded with two goals to cut the lead to one.

Both teams scored once more, leading to a one point lead for the Skyhawks with three minutes remaining. The Skyhawks began stalling, and Westminster keeper Mikala Anderson had to leave the net as the Griffins were forced to expand their defense. Fry scored on an empty net with 57 seconds left to seal the deal for the Skyhawks.

The Skyhawks have a chance to grab the 3rd spot in the RMAC on Tuesday, when they play Rockhurst (3-1, 7-4), who is currently in 3rd, at 4pm at Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
