Luke Mehall, author of “The Great American Dirtbags,” a recently published collection of rock climbing-related short stories, gave a presentation on campus Tuesday evening about his new book.

Mehall, an author local to Durango, has published two books and regularly publishes a magazine of various authors’ work, The Climbing Zine, all of which are self-published, he said.

After the presentation in which Mehall recounted stories of climbing, friends and adventure, he read excerpts from his work.

Mehall’s literary work covers rock climbing, outdoor adventure and change in life, said Tim Foulkes, a friend of Mehall’s.

“You don’t have to enjoy climbing to enjoy this kind of literature,” Foulkes said.

The event consisted of short readings from the stories, a raffle and a haiku contest. It gave Mehall the opportunity to present his work and connect with a broader audience.

The event was organized by the FLC Bookstore in an effort to help bring a local author’s work into the spotlight, said Brooke Ingle, the manager of the campus bookstore.

The biggest struggle in self-publishing is promotion of your work, Mehall said.

“The bookstore tries its hardest to support local authors, since they don’t have the common media outlets like music does with videos and radio play, which puts them in a unique position to really need that support,” said Ingle.

In order to start getting writing out to an audience, self-published or otherwise, it is incredibly important for a writer to practice writing as much as possible, Mehall said.

How the conflict in Ukraine is impacting your commute to campus.

In Durango, you can stroll through downtown and find plenty of donation cash jars in businesses, window paintings, and street art in support of Ukraine. If these elements don’t serve as a large enough reminder of the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, a trip to the gas station might.  The war not only put countless Ukrainian citizens in danger and constant fear but is...

How two students pushed for a portable park and gave a growing community a place to skate.

A skatepark on campus. That was an idea that FLC Students Lleyton Hull and Joey Borer had when they came to Fort Lewis College in the fall of 2021. “It's a cool college,” Hull said. “But why is there not a skatepark when there are so many skaters?” So, Hull and Borer began to work towards building an on-campus skate park. After testing positive for COVID-19, one reporter tells-all about her stay in FLC's COVID hotel

Isolation room 336 smelled like cleaning products and fresh linens the first time I  entered it. When I hurried out the door on my fourth and final day in the COVID hotel, the air that followed me was thick with the odor of soggy, untouched food and unhinged boredom.  I got my positive COVID-19 test results on Jan. 28. A few hours after I got the dreaded email from the health...
