The weekend started out right for the Women Skyhawks shutting out Western State (6-17) in the second quarter on their way to a 67-36 victory Friday night.  On Saturday they beat Colorado Mesa (17-6) 77-50.

“We just locked in, I don’t know how else to describe it,” head coach Jason Flores said. “Players did great job of not allowing them to score the way they wanted to score.”

Continuing from Friday night’s stellar defensive performance, the team was locked in and ready Saturday. The team is coming together, having players contributing all around the court, Flores said.

“I didn’t have to say anything in pre-game,” Flores said about Saturday’s game.

Alyssa Yocky was one of the top scorers in both games.  She ended Friday’s game with 12 points and Saturday’s with 16.

Briana Clah, another top scorer, ended Friday’s game with 19 points and Saturday with 22.

“We just all played together,” Clah said. “It gets a little fun when you start playing hard. You just start forgetting about stats.”

Kayla Herrera had 21 points and six steals during Saturday night’s game. She wanted redemption after being defeated by CMU on the road, she said.

“I was just excited, and stoked to play this team again,” she said. “Coach said to play with your heart, and it shows we did.”

The next game for the Skyhawks will be Friday against Colorado Mines.

“I feel we came into the season underestimated, and as a team seeing the way we’ve been growing since our first tournament we have grown tremendously,” Clah said. “I think we are all looking forward to play Mines.”
