As students busy schedules may lead to absent-mindedness, misplacing and forgetting important items can happen with ease. Luckily, there is a place where these lost and found possessions may be located.

The front desk in the Student Union hosts a “lost and found” box, where all students who find a misplaced items or who are looking for their own are encouraged to go.

All lost items eventually make their way to the front desk, though they may take a few days to arrive, said Hannah Neumann, a student who works at the desk.

“We’ve found a check for $700, tablets, laptops, but usually people are generally nice and return things they find,” Neumann said.

All lost and found items go to the front desk and Jill Wiegert, the assistant director of Student Union Operations, manages facilities and the information desk, said Arnold Trujillo, chief of police of Fort Lewis College.

“Pretty much daily we have people report missing items,” Wiegert said.

Typically, students and staff who use the information desk have left something in a classroom, and come seeking help to find it, she said.

“We have people who report things so we have a concerned persons list and we can call them if it shows up or someone happens to return it.” she said.

Luckily, students and staff at FLC have turned in wallets with money still in them, Wiegert said.

At the end of a semester, items that have not been claimed go elsewhere.

“The last three weeks before a semester ends we post a sign saying that all lost and found items will be given to the Humane Society or Methodist Thrift Store,” Wiegert said.

Only notebooks with paper or items like pencils that can be used by anyone are given to the Free Store, she said.

“So many keys--house keys, car keys, you name it,” Wiegert said. “I don’t know what happens to them all at the end of the year if they don’t get picked up.”
