The Associated Students of Fort Lewis College passed two resolutions on Wednesday evening. The first, Resolution 17-003, awarded $600 to the Economics Club in the form of a travel grant. The second resolution, 17-004, will reaffirm ASFLC’s commitment to the Common Ground Values Statement.

ASFLC must approve travel grants that are over $500, Ian Fullinwider, senator and chair of Student Services, said.

The Economics club will be traveling to Denver for an Economic Development Conference, Greyson Junggren, an Economics club member, said.

The Economics club met all qualifications and was approved by the Financial Allocation Board. The ASFLC approved the $600 travel grant for them, Fullinwider said.

“We just got international honors society accreditation for Economics club.” Junggren said. “We’re going to go do some networking and pass out some business cards.”

The ASFLC is also preparing to examine several other grants at its next meeting.

“We have a couple of grants coming through FAB next week, funds are rapidly dwindling.” Mason Shea, vice president, said.

The ASFLC’s budget might be down to $800 by next week, if any new grants are approved, Shea said.

“How much funds are left has nothing to do with whether or not you approve anything,” Shea said. “It's a first-come, first-serve basis.”

Later in the night Resolution 17-004, reaffirmed ASFLC’s commitment to the Common Ground Values Statement.

In 2011, Common Ground, previously known as Code Red, asked ASFLC to consider implementing its Common Ground Value Statement for the student body, Glenna Sexton, advisor and vice president of Student Affairs, said.

The Common Ground Values Statement is a promise to respect and appreciate others no matter their race, age, color, religion, national origin, gender, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or political beliefs, Field said.

“ASFLC has not reaffirmed the Common Ground Value Statement since it was ratified in 2011, we hereby resolve that ASFLC reaffirm the commitment by the student body to respect the Common Ground Value Statement.” Cliff Field, senator, said.

Common Ground is an organization that is dedicated to promoting cultural awareness and fighting discrimination, Field said.

“Fort Lewis College students become better people by practicing respect and by providing their peers with a prejudiced free zone,” Field said.

The ASFLC unanimously approved of the resolution to reaffirm the Common Ground Values Statement.
