The ASFLC met Wednesday to awarded a travel grant requests from the Recreational Leadership Club, and also discussed a future Ideas for Innovation meeting.

The Recreational Leadership Club consists of: Intramural Club Sports, Outdoor Pursuits, and informal recreation, Cody Christianson, president of the RLC said.

Through Resolution 16-047 the RLC was granted an amount of $1,595.

The grant will be used to fund a trip for representatives of the club to attend a conference in Washington, D.C put on by the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association, which encompasses all things involving collegiate recreation, Christianson said.

At the conference, new trends in recreation are discussed as well as new innovations and new ideas for recreational services, he said.

“After we leave the conference, we try to take some of those ideas and implement them here at Fort Lewis College,” Christianson said.

An example of the implementation of these ideas is the resurfacing of the gymnasium, which features the Skyhawk logo, he said.

Another facet included from the 2015 conference was the addition of new equipment to the weight room in the Student Life Center, Christianson said.

Ideas for Innovation

Also discussed during the meeting was Ideas for Innovation which is an event where students can bring ideas for FLC or the community.

In previous years, any FLC students who attended the event wrote down their ideas on paper and invited their peers to come look at the different concepts and vote on the ones they liked the most, Jordyn Abrams, senator and chair of public relations for ASFLC, said.

The student whose idea got the most votes would be approached by the ASFLC and they would work together to make that proposed idea happen, Abrams said.

An example of an idea that was discussed and approved during Ideas for Innovation is the disc golf course that originated south of the Bader Snyder complex, and the course was then expanded to the Mears apartments, Connor Cafferty, student body president, said via email.

The proposed date for the event is Jan. 27, 2017, but exact dates will not be confirmed until the ASFLC reserves the proper facilities, Cafferty said.
