The ASFLC met Wednesday and approved two grant requests from RSO Is.

Christian Challenge was awarded $1,600 to travel to an upcoming conference, and Student Alumni Networking was awarded $1,058 to host their annual Graduate Networking Forum.

Both grant requests were unanimously approved by the ASFLC.

The source of the money is the Travel and Event grant fund, which is available to RSO Is that wish to either host an event on campus or attend an event outside of Durango.

Resolution 16-045 approved funding for Christian Challenge to travel to Colorado Springs for a national conference.

“At the conference we have guest speakers and we have workshops for things we’re interested in,” Chelsea Ficken, president of Christian Challenge, said.

All included, the cost of the event is $275 per person, and the group plans on bringing 15 people, Ficken said.

The $1,600 grant will lower the cost for each participant by approximately $100, she said.

Those members who are able to pay the full price will do so, meaning it may be possible for more than 15 members may be able to attend, she said.

The conference will take place Jan. 2 through Jan. 6, Ficken said.

Ficken also presented the second grant request of the night.  The request was made by Student Alumni Networking, an RSO I for which Ficken is treasurer.

Resolution 16-046 approved $1,058 for the club to host its Graduate Networking Forum, an annual event that works to connect students with businesses in the community, Fickens said.

The event will take place next semester on March 21, she said.

The first half of the evening will consist of three outside professionals teaching students the basics of networking, she said.

“How do you hold a drink and a plate in your hand, but shake someone’s hand, and still pay attention and focus?” Fickens said. “How do you interact with people professionally?”

After that panel, 30 local business professionals will join the group, and students will have an opportunity to practice their newly acquired networking skills, she said.

For the last three years, the club has requested $1,200 for the event.  This year was the first time they lowered the amount, she said.

“We do know it’s a really tight budget this year, and a lot of RSOs are suffering,” Ficken said.
