Recognition for one’s hard work continues to motivate and assist in a team with blending talents. Christine Groh, a senior playing for the Fort Lewis College Women’s Basketball team, was selected as Skyhawk’s Student Athlete of the week after putting on a tremendous performance against Colorado Christian University on Jan. 24 and the Colorado School of Mines on Jan. 25.

The FLC Athletics website recognized Groh’s performance as Skyhawk Student Athlete of the week indicating she, “netted six of 11 field goals and pulled down 13 rebounds while scoring 14 points against the Cougars...added two assists, a blocked shot and a steal.  The following night in a win at CSM, she posted 17 points and made five of eight field goals and seven of eight free throws.  She was one rebound shy of a double-double, with eight of the nine caroms coming on the defensive end of the court.  Groh shot 57.9 percent from the floor on the weekend... and 75 percent from the charity stripe.”

“You don’t go into a game thinking, ‘I am going to get mine.’  You go into a game thinking of all the preparation you and your teammates did throughout the past week, maybe past few months,” Groh said. “You go into a game with a mentally prepared attitude. It is fun when the game is flowing naturally, and you are feeding off the energy and passion of your teammates.”

There are specific factors that are considered when a Skyhawk Student Athlete of the week is nominated, Sarah Meier said, the sports information director.

“It is based on their performance and how they impact a game. It can be decided by box scores and the stat lines, just how the player is performing,” Meier said.

Meier said nominations are given to the FLC Athletic Administration, where they then review the nominees and decide who will be selected. Each player of the week that is selected is given credibility and recognition through the FLC Athletics website and weekly press releases.

Christine Groh is originally from Grapevine, Texas. She is majoring in mathematics secondary education and is playing her fourth and final year on the women’s basketball team.

Groh said that she is grateful for the FLC women’s basketball team and the places it has taken her.

We attempted to get into contact with other Student Athlete of the week, Wes McKenzie of the Men’s Basketball team, though he was unreachable for comment.
