The Fort Lewis College Skyhawks women’s lacrosse team dominated the Adams State Grizzlies Friday at home in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup that was over from the opening draw and had a final score of 15-2.

The Skyhawks (5-5, 5-2 in the RMAC) will remain in fourth place in the RMAC, behind two undefeated teams, Regis and Lindenwood, and Colorado Mesa, who the Hawks lost to in a hotly contested matchup last week.

On the other hand, the Grizzlies (0-7, 1-9 in the RMAC) will remain in last place in the RMAC.

This matchup was over early with seven different Skyhawks scoring a goal in the first half, including senior Nikki Fry netting herself a hat-trick within the first 18 minutes of the game.

“Adams State runs a pretty standard zone so one v. one’s really aren’t typically going to work against a zone so we just really worked on quick ball movement this week and it actually helped us out that Rockhurst, the other day, also played a zone,” FLC head coach Julia Decker said.

The most noteworthy stats at halftime of this one were the shot numbers and the turnovers. The Skyhawks outshot the Grizzlies 21-4 in the first half and had six less turnovers than the Grizzlies.

The score at halftime was 10-1 and the Skyhawks did not let up in the second, scoring their first goal within the first 40 seconds of the second half.

Adams St. did not take a single shot for the first 19 minutes of the second half. This game was an exclamation point for the Skyhawk defense who only allowed the Grizzlies to shoot five times the entire game.

Fry led the Hawks with three goals while Delaney Benson, Taylor Cabrera, Rebecca Miller, and Brooke Galle all scored two goals apiece in the victory. Along with her two goals, Benson also had a game-high four assists and also a game-high six points overall.

The Skyhawks ended up finishing the game up outshooting the Grizzlies 36-5 and winning the turnover battle 24-11.

The defense played well and with a win in the draw control battle, this game almost turned into a make it and take it kind of matchup, Decker said. Cutting back on the careless turnover was a big emphasis this week. Holding everyone accountable individually is extremely important, Decker said.

The next game for the Skyhawks will be at home this Thursday against UCCS (4-6, 0-5 in the RMAC) at 3 p.m.
