The Fort Lewis College men’s and women’s soccer teams each had two home matches this weekend.
The FLC women lost both of their matches, Friday against the Regis University Rangers and Sunday against the Metro State University Roadrunners, 1-0.
On the other hand, the men defeated the Westminster College Griffins 2-1, and tied the #10 Colorado Mesa University Mavericks 1-1 despite going into double overtime.
In the women’s Friday matchup with the Rangers, FLC was only able to muster five shots in the entire game, none of which were on-goal, which resulted in them being shutout for the first time this weekend.
While FLC did get any shots on goal, RU shot the ball 14 times, nine of which were on goal.
The game was tightly contested throughout, but the Rangers broke the nil-nil tie in the 75th minute when substitute redshirt-junior midfielder Cat Devitt scored on a corner kick to give the Rangers the lead which proved to be too much for the Skyhawks to overcome.
Skyhawk junior goalkeeper Ali Miller did her best to keep FLC in the game as she saved eight out of nine shots on goal.
On Sunday, the Skyhawk women’s soccer team upped their shot total to 13 and their shot on goal total to two but they couldn’t get past the Roadrunners as Metro had seven out of their eight shots on goal and made one of them to defeat FLC 1-0.
The losses this weekend dropped the Skyhawks women to 1-5-1 overall and 1-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Skyhawks have had trouble scoring all season long as they have only scored three goals in their seven contests.
For the FLC men’s soccer squad, the weekend started off on a good note as FLC beat Westminster 2-1 behind goals by freshman midfielder Landon Gibson and freshman forward Ryan Lee.
Westminster had 18 shots, seven SOG, compared to FLC’s nine shots, three SOG.
The difference in the game was the goal keeping. FLC’s freshman keeper Peter Byrne blocked six out of seven shots while the Griffins keeper, junior Max Medley, allowed two of the three shots that came his way.
On Sunday, FLC’s men were lucky to come out with the draw as the Mavericks outshot them and possessed the ball on FLC’s half of the field for much of the game.
The Mavericks had a whopping 13 corner kicks compared to the FLC’s four and also outshot the Skyhawks 14(6) to 11(5). The Skyhawks looked to stifle the number 10 team in the country and played admirably throughout.
After this weekend’s results, the Skyhawks stand at 2-2-4 overall and 2-0-2 in the RMAC.
Next weekend, the men’s soccer team will travel to Alamosa to play the Adams State Grizzlies Friday at 4 p.m. before they come back home to play the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Cougars at 2:30 p.m on Sunday.
The women have another two-game homestand next weekend as they face UCCS Friday at 3 p.m. and the Western State Mountaineers on Sunday at noon.
