Students can vote in the student union with a valid student ID as well as on any on-campus computer.

The ASFLC presidential team acts as an advocate on behalf of the students, and they work with administration, the board of trustees and faculty.

Entering the Race

Evan Wick, current FLC student body vice president, said he wants to be the president because of his involvement with the new strategic plan for FLC’s next 5 years.

Serving as vice president has given him experience working with administration, and he has been heavily involved in the strategy meetings about the direction of the school, Wick said. He thinks his experience as vice president will be an asset if elected president.

Shea Wales, current FLC junior and third-semester senator for the ASFLC, said her passion for student government has grown over her time on senate, and she wants to be even more involved.

Being vice president would be an excellent opportunity to advocate for the students of FLC, Wales said.

Commitment and Leadership Roles

In addition to being the current vice president, Wick said he also works with the office of admissions as an ambassador, and he tries to be heavily involved with student leadership at FLC.

Wales said she has taken on leadership roles as a former lacrosse player and teacher’s assistant, and she is currently a student ambassador.

As a student in science, technology, engineering and math, Wales said she also helps students learn through tutoring.

Qualifications

Wick said his experience as vice president has given him the best experience as far as working with the administration.

“I think the people that I have met, the relationships I have made, you know, really will be useful as president,” he said.

Wales also said it is their experience on the table that most qualifies the team because they know how things function at FLC and with student government.

The Issues

Wick said he is currently supporting the students’ voice as a student member of the steering committee with the administration.

“I think our largest issue right now is transparency in this new strategic plan. We want input to be heard from the students, the staff, the faculty, and send that to the administration,” he said.

Wales said she thinks the most important thing for FLC is student involvement in the college community and the changes in their college community.

“For me, what makes Fort Lewis great is being able to be involved and being able to make a difference in our community,” she said.

Working with Administration

The president has a seat on cabinet, the board of trustees and the budget committee, Wick said. He wants to take the ideas heard in Wednesday night senate meetings and ideas heard from a diverse amount of students to the table at these administration conferences.

He said he could be a great liaison between the provost and the president.

Working as a Team

Wick said as a team he and Shea are great because they represent both STEM and humanities.

"I think having that diverse team really represents both sides of campus, and I think that is what is key because there is that tension between the humanities and the STEM side,” he said

She and Evan are both passionate and driven, and together they make each other better, said Wales. They both are determined and want to get things done.
