The Associated Students of Fort Lewis College met Wednesday to discuss the future of the G.I. Promise Act and the FAB bylaws in regards to RSO II applications.

G.I. Promise Act

ASFLC senate member Joshua Emerson introduced action item 17-043 which addresses the G.I. Promise Act.

ASFLC voted unanimously to support the act and to recommend that the board of trustees does the same.

The G.I. Promise Act is the allowance to accept the out-of-state dependents of honorably discharged servicemen and servicewomen to FLC with in-state tuition.

ASFLC does not have the power to vote on the bill, instead they hoped to come to a decision on whether or not to support it in this meeting, Fink said.  The final say is in the hands of the board of trustees, he said.

“These are people who, for their entire lives, have been moved around by the United States Government,” said ASFLC President Dustin Fink. “So if we can make their access to education a little bit easier, I think that’s the right thing to do.”

The act will only affect a small handful of students. “Even if it affects one FLC student it’s worth doing,” Emerson said.

RSO II Applications

ASFLC also discussed the ambiguity of the FAB bylaw for RSO II applications.

Currently, the FAB bylaws state that to apply to become an RSO II you must first be an RSO I for at least two years prior, vice president of ASFLC  Ian Fullinwider said.

This issue was brought up after Images, a RSO I, applied to become an RSO II after only one year.

That this was up for debate because Images had previously been an RSO II but was demoted to an RSO I last year, Fink said.

After only a year of being an RSO I, Images wishes to return status as an RSO II.

“It is just so ambiguous,” Fink said about the FAB bylaws in accordance to RSO II applications.

ASFLC needs to decide on specifications that won’t allow for this type of ambiguity, Fink said.

The FAB senators will write up a resolution and bring it to the table where ASFLC will take it from there, Fullinwider said.

Southern Ute Financial Literacy Program

A possible Financial Literacy program is under discussion for Ignacio High School.

“What they want is a financial literacy program for their high school students and they want Fort Lewis students to help teach it,” Emerson said.

The FLC students who participate will take this as a class and therefore get college credit for it, Emerson said.

“We’re trying to work in a stipend for incidentals and also gas to and from Ignacio,” Emerson said.

The program should begin either next semester or next year, Emerson said.
