A Shift in Sports Seasons

Fort Lewis College provides students with the opportunity to get involved in an arrangement of club sports including cycling, women’s golf, ice hockey, men and women’s soccer, lacrosse, rugby, tennis as well as the ski and snowboard team.

Club sports are student organizations formed by individuals motivated by a common interest and the desire to participate in a specific sport or activity, said Brandon DenHartog, the Intramural and Club Sports Coordinator.

All of the current clubs were started by FLC students, he said.

In club sports, the emphasis is based on participation. What makes the athletic clubs different than Registered Student Organizations is that the clubs participate and compete with other institutions, he said.

The main goal is to provide students with the opportunity to continue to develop athletic skills and compete. In addition to building those skills, students will develop social and leadership qualities through participating in the different club sports, he said.

Any student, faculty member, or individual employed by FLC can participate in club sports so long as the individual adheres to the club’s rules and regulations.

All student participants must be enrolled in at least three credit hours and have a cumulative 2.0 GPA, he said.

A Recap of the Men’s Lacrosse Season:

The men’s lacrosse team just finished up the fall season and show promise for the spring, he said.

The team went 7-0 during fall ball.

“One of our goals this year is to get a conference championship for our program here, and hopefully go to nationals in San Diego,” said Tim Topper, a junior lacrosse player for FLC.

Ice Hockey’s Approaching Season:

The Ice Hockey team has been a club off and on for a few years but was never successful in maintaining funding and registration with the American Club Hockey Association until last season, said Dan Yeager, the president of the Ice Hockey club.

“Right now we have two goalies and 12 skaters so we are definitely trying to recruit some more players,” Yeager said.

The season begins October 26th with a game against CU Denver at the Pepsi Center.

All home games are played at the Chapman Hill Ice Rink. Home games are as follows:

*Nov 8/9 vs University of Colorado Denver

*Jan 17/18 vs Mesa State University

*Jan 24/25 vs University of New Mexico

*Jan 31/Feb 1 vs Colorado School of Mines

*Feb 7/8 vs Western State University

“The game is a lot of fun to watch, you are guaranteed to see a fast pace, lots of big hits and quite possibly a fight,” Yeager said. “We also want to let anyone know who plays hockey that we want them to come out and skate with us, we are always looking for fresh legs.”
